Earth (Erde)

Nikolaus Geyrhalter

Mankind moves the earth. With shovels, excavators and dynamite, they have become a geological factor and made the planet their subject. While have machinery digs a tunnel into the Brenner Pass, a whole mountain range is disappearing in the marble quarry of the Italian Carrara. In the clash of machines against nature, humans only rarely let their superiority be surpassed by a sense of humility.

Nikolas Geyrhalter built a memorial to large construction sites. His newest documentary, which won the prize of the ecumenical jury at the Berlinale, looks into the open wounds of the earth’s crust and observes humans in mines and quarries during their tireless work unearthing natural resources that represent our livelihoods, but only too rarely receive our appreciation.

Press: „Geyrhalter proves again that he is a unique figure in world cinema.“ (Peter Bradshaw // Guardian // https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/feb/08/earth-review-an-eco-documentary-with-eerie-and-scalp-tingling-landscapes-berlin-film-festival)
