The Immigrant

James Gray

The arrival of the sisters Magda and Ewa in New York in 1921 is meant to be the start of a life of freedom and prosperity. But Magda is put under quarantine because of an illness, and Ewa falls into the hands of the dodgy Bruno, forcing her slowly but surely into prostitution. Because they need money to get Magda treated and free her from quarantine, she agrees to it. Between her and Bruno a complex and contradictory relationship of love, dependency, exploitation and ultimately sacrifice, develops. James Gray, to whom LICHTER dedicated a retrospective last year, engages for the first time with a historical subject in _The Immigrant_, and thus explores the roots of his hometown of New York. With his usual brilliant actors, most of all Joaquin Phoenix, Gray continues to deal with one of his central themes: the emergence of power and dependency at the deepest core of his country and his city.
