A Land Imagined
Yeo Siew Hua
5,4 tons of sand per citizen are being poured into the sea each year in Singapore. The city booms and it’s time to create more space. An artificial, new world is created. The chinese immigrant worker Wang has gone mysteriously missing from one of the countless land reclamation sites. He seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth. Detective Lok is on the case. His journey brings him from the enclave of the guest workers to the pulsing metropolis, into digital worlds – into a world where identity, time and space have become entirely unimportant.
This elegant neo-noir masterfully follows all the rules of the police film until it leaves the constraints of the genre somewhere between metropolis and fluid worlds. On the pulse of global capitalism, A Land Imagined reflects on placelessness and fleeing identities.
