Adults in the Room + Q&A

Costa Gavras

Adults in the Room by Costa Gavras is based on the book of the same name by the former Greek minister of finance, Janis Varoufakis. The film’s topics are the negotiations between him and representatives of the ECB and the ministers of the Euro-group in 2015 after the SYRIZA-party won under prime minister Alexis Tsipras. The film consciously provokes as a mix of satire and tragedy, the reason why it has barely been shown in Germany before. But here it fits right in: in Frankfurt, the home of the European Central Bank. Right now: in a time where the future is filmmaking should be reinvented with the ever-returning questions of freedom, power and money. Adults in the Room masterfully manages to portray the failure of democratic hope to structural power and to show that failure is not a good enough reason to not try and want more.

SIGHT & SOUND: “Adults in the Room navigates those treacherous political waters with great skill, condensinga labyrinthine political and economic situation into a thrilling soap opera.”

Yanis Varoufakis about his book

“Each of the persons I encountered and write about in these pages believed they were acting appropriately, but, taken together, their acts produced misfortune on a continental scale. Is this not the stuff of authentic tragedy?”
