All You Can Eat Buddha (Rerun)
Ian Lagarde
“Welcome to the ‘El Palacio’” – Mike booked his trip ‘All Inclusive’, but his insatiable appetite cannot be satisfied by the picturesque Caribbean holiday resort. The overweight grouch can barely be excited by the vastness of the ocean or the daily evening entertainment. But after saving an octopus’ life at the beach, a strange magic takes hold of him, and so he impulsively decides to stay - for an unforeseeable time. His mysterious aura does not stay undetected. Soon, travellers as well as hotel personnel are affected by his gravitas. Even as the toppling of the government throws the island into chaos, sending the other travellers into flight, Mike keeps his tranquillity. Only his ravenous hunger is gnawing at him.
All You Can Eat Buddha is a tropical-surreal fever dream, an allegory to mass tourism at holiday destinations plagued by less-than stable political conditions.
First-time director Ian Lagarde celebrated his premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017.
