Art-free zone?
The place of art in digital media amongst artists, PR and platform logic
The digital revolution has presented artists with many opportunities for exposure, self-expression, and marketing. At the same time, new media dedicated to a different, more independent and sometimes more courageous way of reporting on art have come into being. 30 years after the beginnings of the dot-com era, dreams of increasing opportunities and more democracy, however, have waned. The new masters are the same ones as before: traditional media groups and the Tech Bros of the New Economy and of Silicon Valley.
The inflation of free content has led to the devaluation of merit. Moreover, the once much clearer boundaries between independent reviews and dependent PR have been blurred.
Together with media experts we pose the following questions: How does cultural journalism work in the digital media? What kinds of opportunities or risks present themselves in these new platforms? What are the chances for the establishment of a "European media platform" as proposed in the coalition agreement?
