Bound in Heaven (Kun Bang Shang Tian Tang)
Huo Xin
At first glance, businesswoman Xia You (played by China’s rising star Ni Ni) seems to lead a carefree, luxurious life in a high-rise apartment overlooking the skyline, but her partner abuses her. While searching for tickets to a concert by singer Faye Wong, she meets and falls in love with street vendor Xu Zitai. When she unexpectedly encounters him again in another city, she leaves her old life behind. Xu is terminally ill, and Xia You chooses to stay by his side in the final months of his life, working as a noodle seller and delivery courier. She cares for him as he grows weaker, and together they visit his estranged parents in the countryside. Death and the fear of dying loom like a Damocles sword over one of the most moving love stories of recent years. There can be no happy ending, but what remains are the days, the fleeting moments that truly matter. At the same time, Bound in Heaven paints a stunningly beautiful portrait of contemporary China, its stark contrasts between city and countryside, wealth and poverty, modernity and tradition, as well as the often unspoken issue of domestic violence.

Press reviews
"Free from any sentimentality, every frame reveals a story of cathartic beauty, not just because of the prominent use of Faye Wong music (Chungking Express) that makes you remember Wong Kar-wai." (Deadline)
"Huo sweetens these clunky, heavy-handed elements with stylistic swagger, gutsy performances, vivid production design and gorgeous visuals. Cinematographer Piao Songri gives the film a lusciously bright look that amplifies the serotonin-drunk, adrenaline-fuelled delirium of its protagonists. Swooping, expansive mobile shots bring the Chinese landscape vividly alive […]." (The Film Verdict)
