Chaos und Stille
Anatol Schuster
A city on the brink of insanity, a woman on the roof and a musician who commits himself to silence. When Jean and Helena, a young musician couple, expect a child, their landlord Klara offers them rent-free living. But then Klara starts giving away all her possessions and moves onto her rooftop – a gesture of radical self-determination or the beginning of a mental breakdown? Whilst the city turns into an absurd spectacle of media, cult, and protest, Jean fights for his music, Helena for her future, and Klara for her freedom.
The director Anatol Schuster from Darmstadt narrates a story of property, sound, and chaos in calm, hypnotic imagery. Between subtle humour and societal analyses unfolds a satirical tragicomedy that asks current questions about autonomy, gentrification, and the art of letting go. Shot in Darmstadt, the movie utilises the city as a lively stage for a captivating open-air chamber play.

Press reviews
“In the longings of his characters Schuster expresses homesickness as well as wanderlust. Breaking out and staying put, alienation from city life as well as love for its melodical soundscape.” (Kino-Zeit, Niklas Michels)
“Chaos und Stille goes one step further with its questioning what is left at the end of life, at the end of art, as Schuster explains in the commentary to his film. But the film interests especially as a drama about the numerous tensions in our world, in which every person reinterprets, claims, and appropriates everything according to their ideology and thus only ends up adding to their own and other people’s loneliness.” (Film-Rezensionen, Rouven Linnarz)
