Circusboy
Anna Koch, Julia Lemke
Santino is living the dream of many 11-year-olds: he is a circus boy. His home is Circus Arena, one of the last big family-run traveling circuses in Germany. For him, this means a new city, a new school and new friends every week. The only constant is the lively extended family, in which everyone has to do their bit to make the show a success. While Santino has to decide what talent he can contribute, his great-grandfather Georg, known to everyone as “Opa Ehe”, tells him stories from the past. Of the magic of the circus ring, of his beloved elephant August (stage name: Sahib), who was known all over the world, and of the unique cohesion in circus families, but also of social exclusion and persecution. A documentary (not only) for children, adorned with lovingly animated sequences, in which you can't help but take the Frank family to your heart.

Press reviews
“The film's highlights are the stories Santino’s great-grandpa tells, the ringmaster “Opa Ehe”. In his distinctive canny way, he carries out the history of circus for Santino. His stories are illustrated, deepened and cleverly commentated by the lovely animations of Magda Kreps and Lea Majeran.” (Fabian Wallmeier, rbb24)
“Between the beautiful shots, captured by Julia Lemke herself, and the soundscape of accordions from composers Nils Kacirek and Jörg Hochapfel, you get a taste of what it must feel like to always be on the road. Lemke and Koch draw this picture without ever romanticising it.” (Falk Straub, Kino-Magazin)
