"Democracy Dies in Darkness" – the slogan of the Washington Post has become nightmarishly relevant. Once a flagship of critical journalism, it has now been put on Trump track by Jeff Bezos. The freedom of press has been left behind.

Is America still a democracy? Or do we already see the erosion of constitutional principles?

In his documentary "Trump und das Silicon Valley", released one year ago, longtime US correspondent and heute journal host Claus Kleber had already warned of a "tech billionaire coup".

Political scientist and director of the Leibniz Peace Research Institute Nicole Deitelhoff observes "an ideologically motivated rejection of European values and the European system".

Does the reach of the anti-democratic script extend to Germany? Are there allies on the far right? Here, too, the faith in democracy is shaken – surveys show growing doubts concerning its stability. The warning signals are evident: the network of right-wing populist forces, the concentration of power through digital monopolies and the creeping instrumentalisation of the media landscape.

This panel is an invitation to discuss the fragility of democratic systems and how media and society can contribute to the protection of freedom and constitutionality.
