Die Sanfte (A Gentle Creature)
Sergei Loznitsa
A woman lives alone in the remote Russian provinces, her husband is in prison, but innocent. As one of her packages to him is returned and no one in her hometown can help her find out why, she takes on the difficult journey through Russia to deliver the package herself. When she arrives at the prison, she is faced with a corrupt, irrational system and meets more and more shady characters supposedly trying to help her. So even on site, her odyssee won’t end but leads her into a cesspool of ignorance, selfishness, violence and inhumanity.
Loosely based on Dostojewskis short story "A Gentle Creature", Sergei Loznitsas puts a mirror to this broken side of Russia and - with harrowing images - takes apart a façade supported only by cynical lies.
