DIY Audiences – Cinema, Criticism and Audience

Workshop | Fr., May 1, 11 am, MASSIF E, Zeil 125, 60313 Frankfurt am Main

Cinema is changing: increasingly, new connections with audiences are being forged not just through blockbusters, but through special screenings, retrospectives and shared cinematic experiences. At the same time, film criticism has also evolved. Beyond traditional arts and culture sections, new spaces for film discussions, recommendations and communities have emerged online, opening up access to cinema and film discourse for many people.

Against this backdrop, the workshop “DIY Audiences – Cinema, Criticism and Audience”, taking place on 1 May 2026 as part of the Congress Future German Cinema, will explore how to attract new, younger and long-term loyal audiences to the cinema today. We invite participants from across Europe and beyond who work in various contexts on audience development, film education, criticism, curation and cinema culture. The event comprises closed working sessions and public presentations in which audience members can actively participate.

Confirmed participants: Tim League (Neon, Alamo Drafthouse), Clément Schneider (L'Acid), Radka Hoffman (Krúton), Victor Fraga (DMovies), Luis Felipe Raguá (Cinemateca de Bogotá), Dennis Vetter (Woche der Kritik), Chloé Folens und Elie de Rudder (La Clef Revival).
Moderation: Geraldine de Bastion, Uri Aviv
