Ein Atem [One Breath]

Christian Zübert

One of the problems with the great crises of our times is their abstractness. What does it mean when entire countries go bust? When an entire population counts the cost of a financial crisis? In *_Ein Atem_* by *Christian Zübert*, the crisis in Greece has been given a human face: Born out of financial necessity, Elena has to go to Germany surviving with a bartending job despite being happy with her boyfriend in Athens. When she notices that she is pregnant, however, she has to quit that job too and starts working as a nanny for the prosperous Frankfurt couple, Tessa and Jan. When Elena briefly doesn’ t keep sight of little Lotte, the girl is kidnapped. The beginning of a downward spiral. *_Ein Atem_*, largely shot in Frankfurt, finds the reasons for intercultural distrust and non-communication precisely in the private and presents pertinent observations of human sensitivities. With films like *_Lammbock_*, *_Dreiviertelmond_* and most recently *_Tour de Force_*, starring *Florian David Fitz* in the lead role, *Christian Zübert* achieved great success. *_Ein Atem_* has had its *world premiere* at the *Toronto International Film Festival* and has been the *opening film* at the *49th Hof International Film Festival*.

_“Concerning the common conceptions of Greeks and Germans, Christian Zübert goes against the grain with an unexpected perspective.”_ (epd Film) _“Christian Zübert’ s socio-critical genre film ‘ Ein Atem’ is a current cinematic contribution to the crisis in Greece. At the same time it is a nuanced portrait of two women.”_ (Frankfurter Rundschau Online) _"The film captures the passion, the agony, the energy of this ambivalent female figure in all their nuances. But it also functions as a sensitive study in a divided Europe, where the aspirations of women for an independent existence are akin but the opportunities of their fulfillment increasingly drift apart.”_ (filmdienst)
