Born as men and similar to drag queens the Femminielli of Naples embody a "hermaphrodite-cult" which has its origins during antiquity. They are regarded as a lucky charm of a society, which sees in them the encounter with their repressed desires, ones that they cannot completely accept. For ten years, the Frankfurt artist Nino Pezzella accompanied the Femminielli with his 16mm camera in the Spanish quarter of Naples. With this intense documentary work Pezzella won in 2014 the Hessischer Filmpreis in the category of Experimental Film.
