Fire of Love
Sara Dosa
Katia and Maurice love two things - each other and volcanoes. For 25 years, the french volcanologist couple were burning for the thrill and the risk of this elemental love triangle. The Kraffts met in the mid 1960’s from then on shared not only their life but also the fascination and passion for melting, liquid rock. Both of them traveled to many active volcanoes, from Zaire to Colombia and Iceland to America and Japan. Katia and Maurice came as close to the dangerous spectacle of nature of such tectonic eruptions from the depths of the earth as possible. Their motto is “curiosity is stronger than fear”. They’ve stood directly by gleaming lava streams and heavy showers of flaming rocks. The Kraffts left behind film and image material of volcanic activity that still look for their equal.

Shane Boris interviewed by Variety:
"When you get closer to what you love, you get a greater understanding: that's how you live a meaningful life and die a meaningful death, and that was reflected so directly in Katia and Maurice's experience."
