Gavagai
Ulrich Köhler
Power struggles over sex, money, great art and the access to the buffet: On the shore of Senegal, a filmic reinterpretaion of the classical Myth of Medea is being made. Medea killed her own children after her husband Jason left her for a foreign princess. And in the midst of the chaotic film shoot, the actors of Jason and Medea do indeed fall in love.
Back in Germany, big egos, inquisitive press questions and an apparently racist incident raise doubts for the couple. Who is the privileged one? The question gnaws at them. Whether they are in Dakar or Berlin, at home or in a hotel; the colour of their skin, the person they talk to and the person tying their bow tie; all this keeps opening up new ways to interprete every scene.
As the film premiere approaches, the complicated reality becomes increasingly intertwined with the tragedy on screen. Yet where the antique drama is bound to end in tragedy, might the filmic present find a way out?

Press reviews:
“Gavagai is pleasantly fast-paced and — especially for Berlinale regulars — incredibly funny time and again. It is a film that can be discussed endlessly afterwards, yet while watching it never feels like work; instead, it is consistently entertaining, brisk, and extremely sharp.” (Christoph Petersen, filmstarts.de)
