Hard Soil - The Muddy Roots of American Music
M.A. Littler
"To talk about music, is like dancing about architecture," Frank Zappa once said, trying put into words the ambivalent relationship between the discourse about music and music itself. Something similar could be said of the movie by the Frankfurt filmmaker M. A. Littler: "Writing about Hard Soil is like ..." Saying this, the remark should be understood as nothing else other than a compliment about a film, which is a festival film (Muddy Roots Music Festival, Tennessee), music documentary (on the development of folk and roots music ) and musician’s portrait at the same time, yet one which is also rather more than just the sum of these genres. Hard Soil not only conveys the experience of a unique music but also proposes the question about alternative lifestyles, which result from it. Here, music as a way of life is not merely cliché, but a living reality!
