HAUS TUGENDHAT
Dieter Reifarth
One knows Mies van der Rohe's Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic as one of the icons of modern architecture: large windows, open spaces, simple furnishings. However, like all architecture is also this house not just a reflection of the different disciplines of art and craft, but equally a reflection of society. The Frankfurt director Dieter Reifarth tells in his documentary, the history of its making, the utopias, which the architect and client associated with it, and the checkered fate of the 1930 completed building after the Nazis drove the Jewish family Tugendhat to flight. We hear from numerous family members, including the philosopher Ernst Tugendhat. Here, the somewhat anecdotal film touches upon many fundamental questions about the role of architecture, how cultural heritage is dealt with, but also on the fate of Jewish families during the Nazi terror.
The film was supported by the Hessische Filmförderung and produced by the Frankfurt Strandfilm and Cologne-based Pandora.
