What kind of Science-Fiction film did I just see? Claire Denis' film High Life does neither fit into traditional standards of the genre, nor does it follow the tradition of experimental cinematic language like Tarkowski. In between, the light is more glaring and colours are brighter.
A group of criminals has been sent to space to search for important energy resources. Instead of doing their time in prison, their mission is to extract the rotational energy of a black hole. Now the crew floats through time and space. It is no surprise that everything does not go as normally as expected. Among a father-daughter-relationship, strange reproduction experiments and a storm of cosmic radiation, getting an awkward feeling while watching is just right.
