In the presence of Edgar Reitz // Die andere Heimat - Chronik einer Sehnsucht
Edgar Reitz
*_In presence of the director and LICHTER patron Edgar Reitz_*
In presence of the director and patron *Edgar Reitz* Jakob Simon grows up during the time of massive migration in the Hunsrück. The 19 year old captures his wish to leave behind the famine and poverty in his home and start a new life in Brazil, just like many others from his region. He confides all eloquently and elaborately in a travel journal. His daily life constitutes of hard work and the struggle for survival. To the annoyance of his father, the romantically inclined and thoroughly educated Jakob appears to be a wanderer between worlds when he escapes his work at the blacksmith workshop to indulge in reading and his manifold daydreaming about the new world. Here, the camera flies in peculiar slowness over the scenic beauty of the Hunsrück in the middle of the 19th century. Somewhere at the edge of the frame, the constant endless convoys of covered wagons call to mind the departure from the faithless servitude at home, towards the allegedly paradisaical dreamland Brazil, thus reminding the viewer of Germany as country of emmigration.
The black and white drama by *Edgar Reitz* received the *German Film Award 2014* and is the back story of the world-famous *Heimat* family saga. With the *Heimat trilogy*, that was produced between 1981 and 2012, Reitz, as representative of the *New German Film*, sets new standards for the filmic documentary narrative.
