Klandestin
Angelina Maccarone
Mathilda (Barbara Sukowa) has returned to her hometown of Frankfurt, where she now serves as the EU Minister in the state government, enforcing a strict border policy. But one day, her longtime friend Richard shows up at her door with 17-year-old Malik, whom he has smuggled from Morocco to Germany—now he expects Mathilda to fast-track a visa for him. However, Malik wants to leave and soon finds himself in Frankfurt’s red-light district, where he encounters other Moroccan migrants, some of whom are involved in a bombing plot. Suddenly, he is falsely suspected of terrorism—only Mathilda’s assistant is still willing to help him. A gripping Frankfurt-set thriller that explores the clash between personal emotions and high-stakes political realities.
The film features a stellar cast, with Barbara Sukowa („Hannah Arendt“, recently honored with the Hessian Film Award for her lifetime achievement) as the conservative politician Mathilda Marquardt, Lambert Wilson („Von Menschen und Göttern as the artist Richard, Banafshe Hourmazdi („Futur Drei“) as Amina, and Habib Adda as Malik. Katharina Schüttler („Oh Boy“) also appears in a key supporting role.

Press reviews
"Angelina Maccarone presented an elegant, albeit somewhat improbable political thriller about a Hessian EU commissioner (played with the dominance of a lioness by Barbara Sukowa) and an illegal Moroccan refugee with “Klandestin”; several of the 16 works in the New German Cinema series dealt with the burning issues of flight and migration." (Tagesspiegel)
"It is admirable how precisely, densely and multi-layered the film weaves its narrative threads into an overall picture: each shot points beyond itself to the big picture, but each personal experience also stands on its own and has its own value." (Film-rezensionen.de)
