Komm mit mir in das Cinema – Die Gregors

Alice Agneskirchner

Life without cinema is possible, but pointless. True to this motto, Erika and Ulrich Gregor have travelled all over the world since 1957 to find unusual films and bring them to Berlin. In an associative montage, film history, German and Berlin contemporary history are combined with the life of the Gregor’s today. Filmmakers such as Jutta Brückner, Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch, Rosa von Praunheim, Doris Dörrie, Michael Verhoeven, Edgar Reitz, Alexander Kluge and Volker Schlöndorff talk about the influence that the Gregors had on them personally and thus paint a vivid picture of the Film culture from the 1960s and 1970s and from New German Film to international independent classics. Together with the Gregors, we go on a journey through 70 years of cinema history and gain insights into the everyday life of this important film couple, who have been married for more than 60 years and still work together every day – true to Bertolt Brecht’s motto: “If you’re still living, never say never”.

About the Gregors

As early as the 1950s, the Gregors initiated the discourse on film in post-war Germany and have significantly enriched German film culture with their work ever since. The two founded the Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek in 1963 and the Kino Arsenal in 1970. In 1971, in the midst of a cultural-political crisis, they made a decisive contribution to the continuation of the festival by expanding the Berlinale to include the new section of the “Internationalen Forums des Jungen Films”.

„Without them I wouldn’t be a filmmaker, right now“ (Jim Jarmusch)

Press Reviews

„Above all, however, it is the Gregors who carry this film with their charming and competent manner and thoughtful choice of words. Those who have not yet been infected by their common love for cinema will be caught by Komm mit mir in das Cinema at the latest.“ (Christian Neffe, Kino-Zeit)
