LICHTER Light Rider // Bumper car cinema III
Now this is neither a typo nor an April Fool’s joke. No, LICHTER has once again planned the most exciting happening of the year. We are turning the Naxoshalle into a place of the most special entertainment: Films, Virtual/Augmented Reality and our newest flash of genius, the Light Rider – the first bumper car cinema in the world!
We’re hearing you ask “But who or what is this bumper car cinema and what does it do?” The answer? Is very simple. It is an Augmented Reality bumper car cinema! All clear? No? Then we’ve got some more details for you.
The 200 square-metre track is turned into a screen during LICHTER 2018. High performance projectors send real-time simulated 3D-Objects in front, next to or behind the moving bumper cars. And this is how the ride becomes manic: all objects can be pushed, shoved and nudged – and whoever is too gentle for that can turn the ride into an obstacle course to master. Quite literally a drive-through cinema.
3D cameras capture all movements of the bumper cars and integrate them into the simulation. Digital and analogue are combined in a never-before-seen cacophony of colour, shapes and cars while our barkers and crazy beats are heating up the atmosphere additionally.
And there is even more: turns for acting barker have been raffled and were, as expected, very sought after. The roles will be filled by bumper-crazies hogging the limelight from your own rounds. Between the daily film screenings and lectures, there will be 1-3hour long exuberant hullabaloo.
We have you to thank in making this possible! We could finance this unique project thanks to our successful participation in the “Kulturmut” Initiative of the Aventis Foundation – so again we’d like to thank those who supported us financially and our morale!
Massive thanks also go to our friends at the NODE Forum, in particular Jeanne Vogt and Theron Burger who have provided their know-how and inventiveness for this daring project.
Who hasn’t dreamed about having a bumper car stadium in the neighbourhood? This dream becomes reality this year at the LICHTER Film Festival. On this line: Let the bumping begin!
