Like someone in Love
Abbas Kiarostami
The story of a meeting between an old man and a young woman in a film always seems to have to move in one direction: the start of a tender love story. In Like Someone in Love, the second film made abroad by the Iranian master Kiarostami, things appear to be quite the re-verse. One evening, the beautiful, young escort Akiko is sent to the apartment of the retired sociology professor Takashi. It is not clear what has moved the strange and personable older man to arrange this meeting – certainly the relationship between the two is not sexual. During long drives on the motorways through Tokyo, they act out , as it were, the hypotheses of their possible relationship. Until finally reality unexpectedly and literally caves in.
"an enchanting game of misfired passions and mistaken identities. (Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter)
