Memories of My Body
Garin Nugroho
When he was a boy, Juno was left behind in the village by his father. While having to fend for himself, he is schooled in traditional Lengger-dance, in which men highlight their feminine side through appearance and movements. Sensuality and eroticism, which are more than present in the physicality of the dance, become a target for attacks in the heated social and political climate of Indonesia. Juno is forced to live like a rover.
Despite having experienced a lot of attention and love on his journey, he needs to face the battlefield that his body has become through all these tensions entirely on his own. Lust and emotion are written onto his body as much as all the violence he experiences.
Memories of My Body is a heart-gripping criticism on the unnatural separation of masculinity and femininity as well as a poetic call to love one’s own body.
