Mi Bestia
Camila Beltrán
A nearing lunar eclipse, which will bring the prophesied birth of the antichrist, provokes a moral and religious panic in Bogotá in the late 1990s. The mysterious disappearance of a neighborhood girl is exploited by the city’s many journalists and further unsettles the citizens, who become progressively paranoid. Thirteen-year-old Mila is caught in the midst of this renewed religious frenzy and notices that the people around her have started to perceive her differently, especially her overbearing stepfather’s lingering stares disturb her. Her mother’s long shifts at work also burden Mila, who starts acting out against her mother’s overprotectiveness. Director Camila Beltrán portrays Mila’s fight for independence with empathy and care and accompanies her protagonist on her unsupervised escapades in the dark woods. As Mi Bestia progresses, both the teenage heroine and the spectator will learn strange things about Mila and her changing body on this journey of self-discovery.
