Film festivals today range from big industry events in Berlin or Cannes to the numerous smaller events that are the only chance for publicity for many films. Christian Jungen and Tanja Krainhöfer discuss the state of the festivals and present their works, on the legendary festival-maker Moritz de Hadeln and the current German festival landscape, respectively.
Christian Jungen is the head of culture for NZZ am Sonntag. The linguist and literary scholar earned his doctorate with a paper on the relationship between the Festival in Cannes and Hollywood. His book “Mr. Festival” is a biography of the former director of the Berlinale, Locarno and Venice, Moritz de Hadeln.
The media economist Tanja C. Krainhöfer works in strategic consulting and applied sciences in the media- and culture economy. Her dissertation is a study on the success factors of film festivals in Germany.
The film critic and filmmaker Rüdiger Suchsland is considered one of the distinguished voices in the film political debate in Germany. Additionally to his work in media like the FAZ, Deutschlandfunk or the SWR, he is the director of two film-historic essay films (“Von Caligari zu Hitler” and “Hitlers Hollywood”)
