Nieuwe Helden
Dirk Jan Roeleven
Everyone has probably noticed by now that the world of professional cycling is marred with problems and scandals. But is not necessarily common knowledge that there are young teams out there who fight to rehabilitate their much-loved sport, cycling. The Dutch documentary filmmaker Dirk Jan Roeleven dedicated his film Nieuwe Helden to such a team, Argos-Shimano as it is called. It is a German team but has its headquarters in Deventer, the Netherlands. They are part of the Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible, the movement for a credible cycling sport. The outstanding rider of the team is from Frankfurt: John Degenkolb. In 2013 and 2014 he was elected as Frankfurt's Sportsman of the Year. Nieuwe Helden accompanied the team during the Tour de France 2013. Nieuwe Helden is a typical sports documentary and a successful reportage. Thrilling are the film recordings of the race. Exciting the interviews that go into the last detail and beyond the usual athlete-blah-blah. This much is certain: This film pleases more people than cycling fans alone.
John Degenkolb is one of the most successful German cycling pros and for romantic reasons, has chosen the Hessian Frankfurt as his adopted home. Already in 2011, he had contact with the region when he won the one-day race “Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn-Frankfurt.” He is now cycling for the team Giant-Alpecin and trains in the beautiful Wetterau, the Taunus and North Hessen when he is at home.
