Opening and Masterclass with Dominik Graf
“How do we navigate the tension between cinematic art, social morality and audience expectations?” asks director Dominik Graf. For many years, Graf has been one of the few distinctive voices in German auteur cinema. Unlike many of his colleagues, he works not only in cinema but also in television, miniseries and series – and manages to retain his unmistakable style across all these mediums.
In our masterclass, Dominik Graf talks about his love of genre cinema, reflects on “success” and “audience-friendly films”, and asks what happens when cinema loses its own world and becomes increasingly artificial.
For Jean Renoir, realism lay not in what the film camera adds to the world in terms of allegories, symbols and meanings, but in “what it reveals of it” (André Bazin).
What freedom remains for the art of film amidst today’s artificialities – and in the face of the loss of an object in a “narcissistic, egomaniacal film culture that reflects the self” (Lars Henrik Gass)?
