Panel: Filmmakers at War

While the future of filmmaking may have much to do with the good, the bad and the ugly of the streaming era, the Russian invasion in Ukraine is bringing back into focus the unique role of filmmakers at war and their singular vision which looks far beyond recording images or propaganda – seeking truth, human connection and memory. In this panel they share their testimonies and experience of filmmaking during military conflicts.

Born in Sarajevo on December 19th 1974, Jasmila Žbanić graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo, Department for theater and film directing. Before filmmaking, she worked as a puppeteer in Vermont-based “Bread and Puppet” theater and as a clown in a Lee Delong workshop. In 1997., together with her friends, she founded Artist’s Association “Deblokada” through which she produced, wrote and directed many documentaries, video-art works and shorts. Among them is feature film “Grbavica”, awarded with Golden Bear on Berlinale 2006. Her latest film Quo Vadis, Aida? premiered at Venice Film Festival, and besides multiple other awards, this movie received European Film Award for best movie, director and main actress , as well as nominations for USA Academy Awards, Oscar in the category Best International Feature Film, and two BAFTA Awards.


Klemen Dvornik (1977) graduated in film and TV-directing at AGRFT (The Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television) in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Until now, he’s directed more than 500 shows of various genres and more than 20 documentaries, short & full-length films and live concerts and has received nine national and international awards (best film, best documentary, student award, the audience award).He’s been working at the AGRFT since 2010. In autumn 2017, he was appointed Assistant Professor of television directing. He is currently President of the Alliance of Slovenian Associations of Filmmakers and Chairman of Supervisory Board of AIPA, Collecting Society of Authors, Performers and Film Producers of Audiovisual Works of Slovenia.
