Ruggles of Red Gap
Leo McCarey
Revolutions rarely provide the starting point for funny movies. And yet the American Revolution provides the basis for one of the most beautiful comedies in film history, which unfortunately has been almost completely forgotten. Charles Laughton plays the part of Ruggles, a distingushed English butler, whose master loses him to a newly rich American couple in a gamble. In Red Gap, a sleepy provincial town in the “New World“, Ruggles lives his own personal revolution and liberates himself from his masters and fights for his right to be an equal among equals (“All men are created equal“).
