Rumours
Guy Maddin, Galen Johnson, Evan Johnson
The world is in crisis. The leaders of the G-7 countries meet up in the German – fictitious – Dankerode, somewhere in the hinterland of Saxony-Anhalt, to give a statement concerning the situation. This turns out to be a rather complicated matter, not only due to differing opinions but also because some bog bodies turn up nearby. And because the whole staff goes missing – and zombies are standing in front of the venue. The three Canadian directors Guy Maddin, Evan and Galen Johnson have cast their political satire brilliantly: Cate Blanchett plays the German chancellor, resembling Angela Merkel in dress and mannerisms, Charles Dance plays the chronically fatigued American president and Dennis Ménochet the French head of state with morbid tendencies. This inside view of power grounds its protagonists in reality and deconstructs the gravity of politicians. The fact that they are also romantically involved with each other adds to the comedic exaggerations of the film, which makes fun of the incompetence of those who are all talk, no action.
