Sechswochenamt

Jacqueline Jansen

Even before the world came to a standstill, Lore's life falls apart: saying goodbye to her mother forcers her to return to her childhood home. As she tries to endure her grief without losing herself, the COVID-19 pandemic pulls the plug on the world. Just when Lore needs support, hugs become a risk, visits an exception, and comfort a distance.

In this double isolation, Lore attempts to put her late mother's life in order. Between forms and family expectations, she wrestles with a farewell that does justice to her mother. The film follows her through the weeks leading up to the titular "Sechswochenamt" - the mass held six weeks after death, when grief has already become part of everyday life, yet everything still remains unresolved.

Drawing on personal experience, director Jaquline Jansen observes what follows the death of a loved one: overwhelm, anger, and the humour of the absurd. Sechswochenamt is relentless in its precision, authentic in its details, and for that very reason comforting. The film does not sugarcoat anything, but gives shape to the pain. The lead actress Magdalena Laubisch carries the film with a fragile presence that never lets go.

About the director

Jaqueline Jansen does not follow a typical educational path, but that of a self-taught filmmaker. Since 2013, she has worked on over forty national and international film sets and assisted, among others, Tom Tykwer, Jan Ole Gerster and Julia von Heinz. She developed her feature film debut, Sechswochenamt, at the beginning of the pandemic and mostly without institutional support.

Press reviews

"Her focused, social-realist feature film debut is a reminder of what young filmmaking is really all about beyond all funding structures and production conventions: a focus on the essentials, trust in one's own experiences, truthfulness, radical tenderness - and an open, precise gaze." (Joachim Kurz, kino-zeit.de)
