Sundays
(Los Domingos)
Alauda Ruiz de Azúa
Ainara seems just like any regular 17-year-old girl. A bit on the shy side, she enjoys going out with her friends, jokes with her uncle, and has a crush on one of her classmates. But there is something brewing inside her. While her friends go through the motions at Catholic school, aloof at mass, their minds on the future that awaits after graduation, Ainara feels a divine calling. Or is her adolescent mind just playing tricks on her?
Part tender, part terrifying, Sundays poses questions often overlooked in increasingly secularized societies, and – through the influence of Ainara's religious pull on the people around her – explores the limits of free thought and free will. Alauda Ruiz de Azúa's assured, emotionally resonant follow-up to her 2022 film Lullaby won over the San Sebastian Film Festival with its nonjudgmental portrait of a teenager coming of age in the most unusual circumstances, showing how the loss and renewal of faith – be it in God, romantic relationships, or one's own family – are processes that naturally follow one another throughout life.

Press reviews
“The director works within a Martelian universe that oscillates between the mystical and the popular, between desire and devotion, and, above all, delves into those families that see themselves as conventional but harbor dark secrets and long-standing tensions that have been simmering for years.” - Diego Lerer, Micropsia
“Sundays is a very provocative film. You probably won’t leave the cinema with a broad smile on your face, but instead asking yourself fundamental questions about your perceived notions of freedom. This is a movie of profound emotional and moral complexity.” - Victor Fraga, DMovies
