The Beasts (As Bestas)
Rodrigo Sorogoyen
The title already gives it away: the Galician village Olga and her husband Antoine have moved to is not as idyllic as one might assume. The couple has made their dream of owning a small, exo-friendly farm reality; a passion which is more and more being threatened. The local farmers, who are already sceptical or even openly hostile towards the whimsical neighbours anyways, vehemently demand their support for a local investment project. Two ways of life clash, and we are forced to suffer with them. Never has a simple tomato harvest been this thrilling or buying sheep been this nerve-wracking. Nothing but love for this thriller!

Press Reviews
„Divided into two time frames, The Beasts is not only disturbing but also deeply moving. Beneath its violent film texture (it is impossible not to recall films like Backwoods [+], Straw Dogs and Deliverance, to name a few of the “you are not welcome here” subgenre) pulsates a thrilling love story: a shared idealism capable of overcoming any fear, tragedy and threat.“ (Alfonso Rivera, Cineuropa)
„In The Beasts Sorogoyen, known for gritty kinetic camerawork that evokes high and scenic tension, keeps a keen internal eye on the male psyche and the traumatic and tense underpinnings of powerful societal structures that coddle its inherent violence.“ (Holly Jones, Variety)
The Director About the Film
“The aesthetics in the first part of the film were those of a classic Western. In the second part, I get rid of the tripods. Everything’s shot with a SteadyCam, which brings the modulating lightness of touch and liberty of a feminine point of view as we follow Olga, compared to the solidity, roughness and bestiality of a male viewpoint. But I don’t think that many people will note the use of SteadyCam, which is what I wanted. The setting’s the same, the characters. But they’ll sense that something is strange, different, however, in the film language, even if they don’t know exactly what it is….That’s at least what I was aiming for.” Rodrigo Sorogoyen in an interview with Variety
