The Condor Daughter
(La Hija Cóndor)
Álvaro Olmos Torrico
High up in the Andes where the condors fly, the Quechua people still live their lives according to old traditions and rules. Here, Clara grows up in the care of her foster mother Ana, who is training her to become a midwife. Clara has a beautiful singing voice that she uses to calm mothers during their births, guiding them through their pain as has been tradition for generations. But she longs to pursue her passion for singing independently of her duties; something the village elders disapprove of.
One day Clara is gifted an old radio which she henceforth guards like a precious treasure because the radio waves carry new music all the way up to the mountains and awaken in her a desire for freedom. She yearns for the colourful world of Chicha music in the big city; but can she replace old traditions with new ones just like that?
With a lot of respect and understanding, Álvaro Olmos Torrico crafted a visually powerful portrait of the Andes, the Indigenous population inhabiting them, and the factors deviding these societies.
Art is often tightly intertwined with tradition. But is the preservation of these traditions more important than your own needs and desires?

Press reviews
"Six years in the making due to the team’s extensive research of Quechua midwife circles, the film proves a tender study of youth and the extraordinary weight of self-realization via sound, which stands as a form of rebellion, expression, a cure for maladies and a call home." (Holly Jones for Variety)
"If you’re looking for an intimate deconstruction of adolescence and the push and pull that happens between the way things are and the way they can be, look no further. And if you find yourself learning about a community you didn’t know all that much about before watching this movie, you’ll be all the better for it." (Lissete Lanuza Sáenz for fangirlish.com)
