The Distinguished Citizen (El Ciudadano Ilustre)
Gastón Duprat, Mariano Cohn
*international competition*
The citizens of the Argentine small town of Salas dislike distinguishing between fiction and truth. When the internationally acclaimed Nobel Prize laureate Daniel Mantovani returns to his hometown for the first time after 40 years, the inhabitants welcome him euphorically. With the voluntary fire brigade, a beauty queen, and general hubbub, they award the lost son the honorary citizenship and erect a monument to him.
But the sentiment topples when it gets around that Mantovani mocked the provincials in his novels. More and more consider him a traitor who earns millions on their back. Whilst the writer is trying to convince the furious citizens of the freedom of art, his past catches up with him. Not only the husband of his former childhood sweetheart has a bone to pick with him. For the intellectual, however, it is all about survival now.
THE VENICE INTERNATIONAL FILMFESTIVAL awarded *OSCAR MARTÍNEZ* the _VOLPI CUP FOR THE BEST ACTOR_. The most important Spanish film prize _GOYA_ decorated *_"THE DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN"_* with the award for _BEST FOREIGN FILM_ in Spanish. In addition, *_"THE DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN"_* was also the Argentinian submission for the best _FOREIGN LANGUAGE OSCAR_ at the _89TH ACADEMY AWARDS_.
