Fine Art of Separating People from their Money

The Fine Art of Separating People from Their Money

Hermann Vaske

Stanley Kubrick often saw television commercials as the highest form of cinematic art - provided you ignored the content. He was not alone in this fascination: In the 90s, established Hollywood names suddenly began producing commercials and music videos – Scorsese, Coppola, Fellini, Lynch – or learned their craft through them: Ridley Scott, Michael Bay, David Fincher.

The advertising industry constantly tried to outdo itself: Who had the most surprising idea, the biggest star, the best joke, the most sex and crime? Dennis Hopper guides us through this maelstrom – and asks the right questions: "Is it art? Is it business? Should it be shocking? Should it be funny? Could you do better?"

For this, Frankfurt director Hermann Vaske brings Hollywood, art, and advertising's who's who in front of the camera: including David Bowie, Anthony Hopkins, Julian Schnabel, Tony Kaye, Joe Pytka, David Lynch.

Dozens of adverts make it clear: In the 90s, the boundary-pushing medium of advertising was not just a misogynistic sales machine, but also an explosive experimental playground for filmmakers. A fascinating journey through time, a lesson in the craft, and above all: pure entertainment.
