The Green Fog
Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson
What is the mysterious green fog about that moves through San Francisco’s streets? Like a green thread, it moves through the found-footage material of famous Hollywood classics and almost unknown productions. They all have in common that they were filmed in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. In its journey through the history of cinema, The Green Fog develops its own humour and a thrilling pull. Original dialogues are almost fully cut, but instead characters who have never met, now engage in silent dialogues through shot reverse shot montages. The film is more than a superficial homage to Hitchcock’s Vertigo: Hollywood’s production of desire knows male figures of identification and their objects of desire. The critique of this system, however, is already present in the images themselves – it merely has to be made visible. Sometimes, a few montages are enough to turn these worlds upside down and follow the traces of the uncanny behind the seemingly smooth façade of the cinema.
