Trial of Hein
Kai Stänicke
Everyone shakes their head: that is not Hein. After 14 years, he's returned to his home island, only to find that not a single person from the village recognizes him. Not his mother, nor his sister, nor even his childhood friend Friedemann. And so, a village court is held to clear up the confusion.
Stranger still is how the returnee's memories seem to differ from the rest of the villagers. Suspicion towards the stranger grows, while a creeping sense of unease spreads from the trial into the island's everyday life. Who is telling the truth here?
The discussion takes place on chairs in the middle of the sand and on furniture set against bare house fronts: a scene reminiscent of Lars von Triers's Dogville, now transposed onto an unspecified island in the North Sea. The dialogues teem with theatricality, and Paul Boche play the returnees with convincing expressions of disbelief.
Emilia Schüle is also brilliant in her role. A thrilling play sets against a village backdrop and dunes that raises questions of identity, memory, and truth.
