Von dem, was bleibt
Johanna Groß, Daniel Hellwig
In 1944, remaining traces of Johanna’s great-grandfather were lost in what is now known as Moldova, where he presumably passed away. The circumstances under which he passed are still unknown to his family. Equipped with her great-grandfather’s letters from the front, Johanna Groß attempts to find out more about her great-grandfather’s fate in her documentary and shows how the loss of a husband, father and grandfather affected the different generations of her family.
Johanna Groß’ moving graduation film was nominated for the Hessischer Filmpreis and celebrates its Rhein-Main premiere with us.

Press Reviews
“Johanna Groß, with immense narrative power and personal bravery, portrays how war trauma can affect generations, and shows that the way to absolution is possible; liberating and painful at the same time.” (Jury statement on the nomination for the Hessischer Filmpreis)
The director about the film
“I was 32-years-old at the time of filming, the same age as my great grandfather when his traces were lost. In a very strange way, I felt like putting an end to this chapter for my family, so a new story could be told; my story, the story of my sisters and the generations that will follow us.” (Johanna Groß in an interview with Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.)
