We Own the Night - Helden der Nacht
James Gray
New York, 1988: Nightclub manager Bobby Green and his girlfriend Amada enjoy their extravagant lifestyle to the fullest. As the black sheep of a family in which the father and brother are successful policemen, only the freedom of the night counts. He does not want to see that the Russian mafia brutally and uncompromisingly controls New York's underworld and he dismisses the cooperation with the police. As Bobby's brother Joseph is seriously injured during a raid and drug lord Vadim openly declares war to the police, Bobby gets caught in the crossfire of an uncontrollable war. He must decide for one side, even though he no longer has any choice. Gray's thriller is rough and intense. Joaquin Phoenix moves sensitively through colourful party worlds and grey-shrouded street canyons, which at crucial moments turn into scenes of surrealistic chases.
"Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix are terrific as estranged brothers - one a cop, the other a criminal - in a subtle and thrilling tale of the New York underworld." (Tim Robey, The Telegraph)
