Why Art is the Opposite of Culture
Bazon Brock, an artist without an oeuvre, about the present culturalism.
'When everything is culture, nothing is art anymore', according to Bazon Brock. As an art mentor and companion of Beuys, he has for a long time been putting forward a fundamental culture critical finding: art is increasingly being replaced by a generalised concept of culture. However in this new 'culturalism', individuality and the real function of art within society are lost. The idea of art as critique and provocation turns into conformity, lifestyle and wellness. As a result, the opportunity to criticise the status quo through art and draft a better life for the screen, disappears. To kick off our discussion, this "artist without an oeuvre" and maverick in the artistic and intellectual realm, talks about what this means for the present, for cinema and the future of art.

When art is absorbed - The 'culinarisation' of film in TV and cinema
Are films more commercialised than fine arts or music – or is that a misapprehension? When plans for commercial television were being drawn up in the early 80s, Bazon Brock was involved. Ultimately though, Alexander Kluge went his own way and the utopia of the 'third television' gave way to the cultural programmes that are now also broadcast on public service television.
Building on his recital, Bazon Brock discusses the consequences of the ‘culturalisation’ for cinema. What happens when films are expected to promote the good, to protect the environment and save the democracy? What kind of films will still be made in the future? And what films won't – because they can not even be conceived. Or should art in the 21st century be socially useful? Perhaps we need to forget about the useless.
