Zeppelin oben rechts

Olli Duerr

Art as an expression of personality, experience and passion – the documentary Zeppelin oben rechts takes us into Atelier23 of the care service centre Lebenshilfe Gießen, which functions as a creative retreat for seven unconventional artists. Director Olli Duerr has followed them for years – from first brushstrokes, during intense creative processes, and finally to the presentation of their works in the inclusive gallery Galerie23.

Omitting any commentary, but not sparing any details, the film allows the artists to speak for themselves. We meet Andreas Kuhl, whose photographs profess a fascination with utility poles and train tracks. Birgit Gigler paints colourful portraits of women, while Jens Bleckmann creates meticulous, almost architectural drawings with fine liner. Uwe Breckner builds miniature fairground rides, Lena Kasperski works on detailed linoleum cuts, Mirka Holsteinová on expressive aquarelles, and Eric Kosuch whisks us away into the world of prehistorical animals.

With great intimacy and authenticity Zeppelin oben rechts succeeds to not only make the art but also the people behind it tangible – funny, intense and absolutely worth a watch.

Pressestimmen

“The lifeblood of Olli Duerr’s portrait of a workshop for people with disabilities in Gießen takes the form of its spectacular protagonists Birgit Gigler, Jens Bleckmann, Eric Kosuch, or Mirka Holsteinová. They all have some form of physical and/or mental handicap – and they all are artists who produce astonishing works of art whilst letting their personality inform their paintings, graphics, or sculptures in a highly individual way.” (Martin Schwarz, TIP Berlin)

“The documentary Zeppelin oben rechts depicting the Atelier23 of the care service centre Lebenshilfe Gießen has opened the 58th Internationale Hofer Filmtage. The reaction of the premiere audience showed that this documentary about an inclusive artist collective shines beyond its depiction of the care service. It is a film for the big screen and a large audience. During the premiere at the Scala-Kino in Hof, people laughed, dreamed, smiled to themselves, and cried. This was clearly the result of a touching performance. Its success can be attributed to the director trusting his audience and completely omitting voice-over narration.” (Gießener Zeitung)
