What began as a small podcast now delights a growing community: Bohniger Wachmacher – a half-hour morning show by and with Dax Werner and Moritz Hürtgen, which has been broadcast every Monday and Thursday since February 2024. Instead of stressful news and outrage rituals, it offers half an hour of cheerful world understanding: feel-good news, literary miniatures, local curiosities, and the ongoing audio novel Café Herzsprung. Its motto: “Kind in substance, gentle in approach.”

As part of the Congress Future German Cinema, Werner and Hürtgen go one step further: they attempt a loving renovation of German public broadcasting – and come up with new, entertaining format ideas.

Who are these they?

Dax Werner, broadcasting with love from Cologne. Singer and guitarist of the band “The Screenshots” and Twitter legend. Always remained human. Besides coffee, he is also interested in 3D printing and racing simulations.

Moritz Hürtgen, broadcasting from Munich. Former editor-in-chief of the satirical magazine Titanic. Today he is a man of independent means (freelance author), host of a show at the Munich Volkstheater, and columnist for the country's two most important media outlets (Titanic and Apotheken Umschau).

Together, they produce what the name promises: a bean-based pick-me-up—and, on this evening in Frankfurt, perhaps also the outline of an optimized public service approach.
