In the midst of the Thirty Years’ War, a silent soldier stumbles into a remote village: thin, scarred, carrying a document that declares him the heir to an abandoned farmstead. Marked by battle, Rose searches for a place where he can settle down. Against the resistance of the community, he gradually builds a new life. But status and belonging here are determined by property and alliances. So he pushes his calculation to the point of an arranged marriage with a farmer’s daughter. The more firmly he commits himself, the riskier the masquerade becomes — until a secret throws the entire village into turmoil.
Sandra Hüller turns Rose into an invented existence in a way hardly any other actress could: radically disciplined, unwavering, driven by sober pragmatism — a strange duality of calculation and fragility. Director Markus Schleinzer does not counter this with psychological explanation, but with form: a camera that keeps its distance, archaic language, glances instead of explanations. In this way, the coldness of order speaks. A black-and-white cinema that reflects the present in the costume of the past.
