International Short Film Programme
THU 18. APRIL I MAL SEH’N KINO I 22:00 I DURATION: CA. 87 MIN
Faces, landscapes, cities – words, gestures, conversations: when they become images, we can observe them anew, interpret them, put them into perspective. The short films in this programme offer the opportunity to do so by creating unexpected, irritating and funny moments that call on us to think about and question them further.
ET SI LE SOLEIL PLONGEAIT DANS L’OCÉAN DE NUES
A construction site at the beach of Beirut – things seem to be going as normal. But nothing is as it seems. The promises connected to the construction project reveal themselves to be a great illusion with each encounter in this non-place. The result is a bitter parable about a country that seems to have given up all confidence.
France/Lebanon 2023, OV with English subtitles (Arabic), Director: Wissam Charaf, Duration: 20 min.
LOREM IPSUM
Three encounters, two people, one mask: a feminist essay that employs historical silent film aesthetics to ask which roles we play, which images we imitate and which ones we create ourselves.
Nigeria 2023, without dialogue, Director: Nosazemen Agbontaen, Rete Poki, Duration: 8 min.
UNDR
Hardly any other region in the world is as permeated by history and its conflicting interpretations as the area between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River. In a montage of historical images, mostly aerial photographs, the contradictions that arise from the appropriation, surveillance and transformation of this land appear.
Palestine 2024, without dialogue, Director: Kamal Aljafari, Duration: 15 min.
CIVID
A young man returns to Los Angeles. He drives through the city in his car, picks up old friends, and drives with them seemingly aimlessly through the urban landscape. The conversations reveal fragments of a life of which it is not clear whether they can form a whole or not, but each of which illuminates an aspect of human relationships.
USA 2022, OV with English subtitles (English), Director: Dwayne LeBlanc, Duration: 19 min.
JE VEUX DÉGUSTER
To say that Antonin is offended by the rules of civil behaviour in society would be an understatement: his behaviour ranges from subversive nonsense to outright violence. Director and lead actor Léo-Antonin Lutinier plays with the ambivalence of this behaviour, which the protagonist has to confront in the course of the film.
Award winners from our partners at the Festival de Contis.
