Welcome to Karastan
Ben Hopkins
The London director Emil Forester finds himself in a creative crisis. He already won the coveted Short Film Oscar, however fame is known to be transient. So it is a happy coincidence that Forester is invited to a retrospective in the Caucasus republic Karastan – to one of the possibly least important film festival in the world. Once there, he immediately is ordered to shoot a propaganda film for President Abashiliev, politically close to the party line, history-distorting and far away from the reality of the newly formed east-dictatorship. The shooting quickly falls behind schedule: Hollywood legend Xan Butler deranged and with a diva attitude, whilst during the casting of the extras the assault rifle of the military ‘speaks’ and in the picturesque mountains of Karastan a mysterious guerrilla unit operates. Director Ben Hopkins creates a wonderfully absurd-eastern bloc scene using subtle arrangements. With the support of HessenInvestFilm the Frankfurt co-producer Daniel Zuta realised part of the film at the River Main.
_Welcome to Karastan_ celebrated its world premiere in 2014 at the Montreal International Film Festival. At the Hamburg Filmfest, co-producer Daniel Zuta from Frankfurt was honoured last year with the renowned Hamburg Producers Award for European Cinema Co-productions.
