Vamos a la Playa

Bettina Blümner

Finally vacation! Soaking up the sun in Cuba. Technically, the students Benjamin, Katharina and Judith travel there to find Katharina‘s brother Wanja. But this plan quickly becomes irrelevant. Katharina is looking for sexual adventures, Benjamin for true love and Judith definitely not for a relationship. When they meet the dance instructor Ignacio, their triple constellation is shaken up.

A mix of road movie and coming-of-age film by director Bettina Blümner, who teaches film studies at Hochschule Darmstadt.

The Director About the Film

Vamos a la Playa is filmed from the perspective of three German tourists. The film is about key moments of growing up and addresses contradictions and painful experiences. The film pushes the protagonists into a country that comes apart at its seams and that works differently than they imagined. In this environment, Katharina, Judith, Benjamin and Wanja begin to question themselves. As the facade is crumbling, so is their self image. Simultaneously, the film is about how Europeans behave abroad. We rejoice at and are ashamed about our privileges. Simultaneously, we dream about making the world fairer. The great question is: how?“ Bettina Blümner
