Yallah! Underground

Farid Eslam

The Arabic world is shaking. In the underground of the metropolises Beirut, Cairo, Amman and Ramallah, young artists and musicians are living their dream of freedom and democracy. With electronic beats, unrelenting lyrics, and self-confident femininity they are jolting the pillars of the autocratic regimes. Armed with guitars and microphones they are trying to change society. For them, Arabic tradition and Western life style are no contradictions: HipHop merges with oriental melodies; distorted rock sounds arise over freshly brewed mocha. Nevertheless, they accept great risks for their convictions. Between 2009 and 2013, the filmmaker *Farid Eslam* from Rüsselsheim accompanied some of the most influential underground artists of the Arab Spring. His moving portrait of a generation between new beginnings and resignation has been awarded with the *Hessischer Filmpreis 2015*. *Co-production:* Dana Wilson, Dina Harb, Jeffrey Brown,

_Farid Eslam takes us along in a world shaped by religious tensions, repressive systems and the hungry desire for freedom. But principally, he shows us the wonderful musicians the Arabic region is bringing forth. Yallah! Underground holds such a powerful energy so that right after the movie you actually just want to pack your bags and dance the nights away in Beirut."_ (Jury Hessischer Filmpreis) *In the presence of Director Farid Eslam*
